How to find the right golf shoes
Are you an all-weather golfer? Is stability the most important thing, or is it breathability? Is it really true that you can only wear white golf shoes if you’re a single-handicap player? There are many questions that may come up when buying new golf shoes. Our expert Johan Blom answers a few of them.
Which material should I choose?
– Leather shoes are easy to keep clean in the long run if you wipe them down and treat them with shoe cream a few times each season. They also tend to resist moisture effectively. Fabric shoes, on the other hand, give a sportier look and are often lighter and more comfortable to walk in, especially when it’s warm outside. Here you can read more about how to take care of your shoes.
Spikes or not?
– The spikeless trend is becoming increasingly popular, both because such shoes are often more comfortable and because they can also be worn off the course or on your way to and from it. Shoes with soft spikes provide better grip in wet conditions, and some tests even show that you can hit the ball farther. If you can have multiple pairs, a good tip is to keep one pair of leather shoes with spikes and alternate them with a spikeless, sportier pair on the hottest summer days. Alternating between different shoes also increases their lifespan.
Find the right fit for your golf shoes
– It’s good to know that several brands offer different widths in their models. Many places also provide a 3D foot analysis if you want an accurate picture of your feet. Otherwise, the best tip is to make golf-like movements when trying on the shoes. Do a pretend swing and feel if they stay stable on your feet.
Are waterproof golf shoes important?
– Even if you consider yourself a fair-weather golfer, it’s always wise to invest in at least one pair of waterproof golf shoes. For morning dew, unpredictable weather during competitions, or when your ball ends up a little too close to a water hazard. Playing 18 holes can feel long if your feet get wet already on the fourth hole.
Is it true that only single-handicap players can wear white golf shoes?
– The myth comes from the fact that golf clubs historically had fairly strict dress codes. White golf shoes quickly became associated with “real golfers”, often the more experienced or competitive ones. But a myth is exactly that – a myth. Of course, you can wear whatever shoes you like! You can be a beginner with a high handicap and still look like a pro in your crisp white shoes.
